What is Total and Permanent Disability with Critical Illness Insurance Cover?
Posted on February 4th, 2011 in All Posts, Critical Illness Cover. These days most critical illness cover providers will cover over 30 critical illness definitions. One of these definitions is that of Total and Permanent Disability. Total and Permanent Disability means that if you suffer from any illness, condition or accident that totally and permanently prevents you from working, then you have a claim.
However the term “totally and permanently prevents you from working” can vary from insurer to insurer. Another factor is what occupation you do. For example if you are an office worker then chances are that if you cannot do your job then you may not be able to do any job. However if you are a builder then just because you cannot do your job doesn’t mean that you cannot do an office job. Therefore the definition of Total and Permanent Disability depends of what occupation you are and also what the insurance companies underwriting criteria are.
The table below shows the different levels of totally and permanently disability definitions that insurance companies use.

| Sometimes depending on your occupation or previous medical history the insurer may not cover Total and Permanent Disability on the Critical Illness Insurance. This is the worst option. The best option and the more likely you will be able to claim is if you cannot do your own occupation. The next best option is that of any suitable occupation. Even though you cannot do your own you can do something else. The next best cover offered for Total and Permanent Disability is Activities of Daily Living. This varies from insurer to insurer. However it involves doing test on the policyholder. The tests and criteria depend on the actual insurer but one example would be if the policyholder cannot and will never be able to do 3 or more of the following five tests. These tests are known as activities of daily living. Walking, Bending, Communicating, Reading, Writing. As you can see there is a lot more to comparing critical illness policies than just cost.
